Why maintaining optimum sugar level is essential for healthy skin
Healthy Skin
What you eat and how
your body processes it have a significant impact on your skin. For healthy
skin, we need to maintain an optimum sugar level. According to Institute of
Applied Dermatology (IAD) senior dermatologist Dr. K.S. Prasanna, one of the
most overlooked contributors to skin problems is elevated blood sugar levels.
"High sugar level
or diabetes over time can cause damage to skin. It can lead to premature aging,
sagging skin, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. High blood sugar
also causes common skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It can
cause the skin to become more reactive, red, and prone to breakouts.
Additionally, insulin spikes can stimulate excess oil production, clogging
pores and worsening acne," she said.
Another major health
issue faced by individuals with diabetes or insulin resistance is slow wound
healing, dry skin, frequent infections, and in some cases, discolouration and
thickening of the skin in certain areas.
"Maintaining
optimal blood sugar is most important for overall health of your body. Ensure
that you eat a balanced diet which consists of whole grains, vegetables and
fibre-rich food. A balanced diet not only helps stabilise sugar levels but
ensures emotional well-being. Apart from diet, one needs to do regular
exercise, stress management, and have quality sleep for good health," she
adds.
By keeping your blood
sugar levels in check, you're not only preventing chronic diseases but
promoting healthy skin.
