Facial Foundation Creams, Powders are Good for Facial Care: Dr K S Prasanna

Facial Foundation Creams, Powders are Good for Facial Care

Facial care

People have many doubts regarding the use of facial foundation creams and face powders. According to Senior Dermatologist Dr K S Prasanna, these products don't harm facial skin but actually improve complexion. "It's good to use them because they add more complexion to the face," Dr. Prasanna explains. "They are essential tools in skincare and personal grooming that offer multiple benefits beyond simple aesthetic enhancement. These products provide a protective layer that helps maintain skin health while creating a smooth, even complexion." Dr Prasanna emphasizes that foundation creams act as a protective barrier against environmental stressors. They shield the skin from harmful UV rays, pollution, and dust particles that can cause premature aging and damage.

There are four types of facial foundation formulations available in the market:

·        Oil-based: Provides a moist skin feeling and is good for dry skin

·        Water-based: Suitable for minimally dry to normal skin

·        Oil-free: Good for oily skin

·        Water-free: Well-suited for facial camouflaging

However, she also warns of possible side effects which some people may experience when using foundation creams. "The most common side effect is what patients describe as 'breakouts'," Dr. Prasanna notes. Some individuals notice small acne-like points 2-3 days after using a new facial foundation. This occurs due to irritation around hair follicles. Facial foundation can migrate to skin pores where hair emerges, mixing with sweat and sebum, which breaks down the cosmetic film.

Prevention and Powder Use

To prevent foundation migration and improve sun-protective ability, Dr. Prasanna recommends using powder over foundation. Facial powders contain talc (hydrated magnesium silicate) and covering pigment. They effectively absorb oil and sweat, helping to set the foundation and create a refined look. Ultimately, facial foundations and powders remain a valuable tool in daily skincare and makeup routines when used appropriately and chosen to match individual skin conditions.
