Excess Water Intake

here is a common belief that drinking plenty of water can give you flawless, acne-free skin and that it also prevents several skin diseases. According to Senior Dermatologist Dr K S Prasanna, though staying hydrated is essential for overall health, drinking excessive water will not directly cure or prevent skin conditions like acne, eczema, or psoriasis.

"Water plays a crucial role in maintaining skin hydration, elasticity, and overall function. Well-hydrated skin is healthier, but drinking excessive water will not directly cure or prevent skin conditions like acne, eczema, or psoriasis. The majority of skin problems are often caused by multiple factors, including genetics, hormones, diet, skincare habits, and bacterial, viral and fungal infections," she said, adding that to have healthy skin, one needs to follow a nutritious diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and essential fatty acids.

"Apart from following a proper skincare routine using gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreen, managing stress is also an important factor in having healthy skin. Drinking the required quantity of water helps in flushing out toxins from the body, but increased water intake alone cannot cure acne or other skin diseases," Dr Prasanna said.

Stressing the importance of staying hydrated, she said dehydration can make the skin look dull, dry, and flaky. "It can lead to increased oil production, which may contribute to clogged pores and acne. Drinking enough water supports skin health, but it should be combined with a proper skincare routine and a balanced diet," she added.

A combination of hydration, skincare, and lifestyle choices is the key to maintaining clear and healthy skin. Always consult a dermatologist if you have any health issues.
