Why you should choose right shampoo & conditioner for healthy hair
Right shampoo & conditioner for healthy hair
Selecting the right shampoo and conditioner is of prime importance for your hair care. Your hair care routine is more than just a cosmetic choice—it's critical to maintaining scalp health and hair integrity.
According to Senior Dermatologist Dr K S Prasanna,
there is a popular belief that all shampoos are the same except for their
differences in colour and fragrance. But this is wrong. Each formula is a
carefully crafted blend of detergents, oils, and water designed to clean and
nourish your hair and scalp. "Shampoos are used for removing dirt and
excess oil without stripping away the natural sebum that protects and nurtures
your hair. So when selecting a shampoo, consider your specific hair type,"
she said.
For those with normal hair, choose a balanced
shampoo that provides gentle cleansing with minimal conditioning. If you have
oily hair, opt for a formula that offers deep cleansing properties. Individuals
with dry or damaged hair should select shampoos that provide mild cleansing and
extensive conditioning. Special considerations exist for different needs. Baby
shampoos, for instance, are formulated to be extra-gentle with mild cleansing
agents. Dr. Prasanna said there are certain medicated shampoos containing
specific additives available in the market to address certain scalp conditions,
but they should only be used under professional guidance.
Even the selection of an appropriate conditioner is
equally important for hair health. "A quality conditioner does far more
than simply make your hair feel soft. It reduces friction between hair shafts,
repairs damage, decreases brittleness, and improves overall hair
strength," she said, adding that a balanced diet rich in proteins,
vitamins, and minerals is significantly important for hair health.
"Ultimately, understanding your unique hair type and investing in
appropriate hair care products is an essential part of hair care. Always
consult a professional dermatologist and seek their advice before choosing a
hair care product from the market," Dr. Prasanna added.
