Acne can be well-managed through a holistic approach combining allopathy, diet, yoga, and Ayurveda

 Acne

Acne is the most common skin condition that primarily affects those in the adolescent age group. Acne and the blemishes resulting from it affect self-esteem and overall well-being. While allopathic treatments like topical retinoids, antibiotics, and hormonal therapies are available for acne treatment, a holistic approach that combines allopathy, yoga, diet, and Ayurveda will be a more comprehensive solution.

Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) founder-director and senior dermatologist Dr S R Narahari says diet and stress management play a crucial role in skin health. "There are studies which show that high-glycemic foods, dairy products, and processed foods can exacerbate acne. People suffering from acne should incorporate a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. It can help reduce inflammation and promote clearer skin. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties that can be beneficial for acne-prone skin. Also, probiotics found in yoghurt and fermented foods are good for gut health, which is closely linked to skin health," he said.

Dermatologist Dr K S Prasanna added that stress management also plays an important role in skincare. "When we are stressed, our bodies produce more cortisol, a hormone that can increase oil production and inflammation in the skin. By managing stress through meditation, yoga, and deep-breathing exercises, we can reduce stress levels and improve skin health. Regular physical activity is also beneficial, as it not only reduces stress but also increases blood circulation, helping to nourish the skin," she said.

Dr Narahari added that following certain ayurvedic remedies was also beneficial for skin health, specifically for acne. "Combining allopathic treatments with dietary changes, stress management, and ayurveda provides a multi-faceted approach to treating acne. Patients should consult a professionally qualified dermatologist before starting an integrative treatment, which provides a more comprehensive and sustainable solution for managing acne," he added."
