How skin whitening creams damage our skin

Skin whitening creams are
trending these days because they promise to make skin fairer within a few weeks
of use. But are these creams really good for the skin? World over, these types
of creams are increasingly coming under scrutiny due to their potentially harmful
effects on users' skin and overall health. These products, which often contain
steroids or hydroquinone, promise a lighter complexion but cause severe skin
damage with prolonged use.
Dr K S Prasanna, a senior
dermatologist with Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) in Kasaragod, says
that many people are unaware of the serious risks associated with these creams.
"They start using such creams for a fairer skin but actually they are
taking a huge risk. The active ingredients in these creams, particularly
steroids and hydroquinone, can cause a range of adverse effects on the skin,
mainly skin redness and inflammation, dilated blood vessels leading to a
blotchy appearance, increased acne and pimple outbreaks, uneven skin texture,
and hyperpigmentation making skin darker," she said.
"We've seen cases where
patients develop a dependence on these creams. When they stop using them, their
skin reacts badly, often becoming darker than before," Dr Prasanna said.
According to her, one needs to
embrace their natural skin tone rather than focusing on lightening. "Use
sunscreen, maintain a balanced diet, and consult skincare professionals for
safe and effective ways to address skin concerns," she added.
