Early detection is crucial in skin cancer treatment: Dr S R Narahari
Skin Cancer
Though
skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, it's also one of the most
treatable if detected early. According to Institute of Applied Dermatology
(IAD) founder-director and senior dermatologist Dr S R Narahari, the most
important way to ensure early detection is through regular self-examinations
and an annual skin check by a medical professional. "You need to be wary
of moles and colour variations on skin. Always pay special attention to areas
frequently exposed to the sun and also spots like between toes or under nails.
If there are any variations, roughness, or colour changes on the skin, consult
a dermatologist," he said.
There
are also advanced diagnosis methods including dermoscopy (a specialized
magnifying device) and skin biopsies to confirm cancer. "Several treatment
options are also available. The options vary depending on the type and stage of
skin cancer. The most common treatments are surgical excision, cryosurgery
(freezing using liquid nitrogen gas), topical chemotherapy, and photodynamic
therapy," he said, adding that as melanoma is the most dangerous form of
skin cancer, early detection is crucial in treating this form of cancer.
Dr
Narahari adds that prevention is always better than cure, and everyone should
take extra care to protect the skin from UV radiation by using broad-spectrum
sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours.
