Timely diagnosis is important in treatment of Lymphedema

 Treatment of Lymphedema

As we observe World Lymphedema Day, it's imperative that we spread awareness and understanding of this chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide. According to Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) founder-director Dr S R Narahari, though lymphedema causes swelling and pain due to fluid build-up, it remains poorly understood and often undiagnosed until later stages. So, it's a must that we educate people about lymphedema for proper management.

According to Dr Narahari, the most important thing in lymphedema management is early detection and proper treatment. If there is persistent swelling in limbs or changes in sensation, the person needs to immediately consult a professional medical practitioner for evaluation.

Lymphedema is caused by different reasons. While primary lymphedema is caused as a genetic disorder due to alterations in genes responsible for the development of the lymphatic system, secondary lymphedema is caused when a normal lymphatic system in a person becomes damaged due to surgery for cancer, radiotherapy, infections like cellulitis, parasitic diseases like lymphatic filariasis,  . Other causes are medical conditions that damage the lymphatic system, venous diseases, DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and obesity, accidental trauma and injury to the lymphatic system and lack of movement or exercise.

"Our decades of scientific study have proved that integrative treatment combining modern medicine with ayurveda and yoga is the most effective treatment for lymphedema. So, on this day, help spread the word about lymphedema as increased awareness and early intervention can vastly improve the quality of life of lymphedema patients," Dr Narahari added.
