Proper precautions can prevent skin diseases in summer: Dr Narahari
Prevent skin diseases in summer
The summer is at its peak and the combination of
heat, humidity and increased sun exposure can lead to a variety of skin
problems.
Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) founder
director and senior dermatologist Dr S R Narahari says by taking proper
precautions, one can enjoy summer while keeping skin healthy. "The most
prevalent issue during summer is excessive sweating and occlusion, which can
clog pores and trigger acne-like breakouts, folliculitis and heat rashes. So,
to prevent this, wear loose, breathable fabrics, exercise in a cool environment
when possible, and use an oil-free sunscreen and moisturizer. Those with acne
may need a stronger topical treatment," he said.
Dr Narahari said fungal skin infections like
athlete's foot and jock itch also thrive in warm, moist areas. "Ensure
that you keep areas dry, wear moisture-wicking inner wears, and use an
antifungal powder," he said.
For patients suffering from lupus (SLE), rosacea
and eczema, he advises to avoid direct UV exposure as it can trigger rashes or
inflammation. "Avoiding direct sun and also maintaining a balanced diet
are crucial in preventing triggers that could worsen eczema," he said.
Other skin issues commonly seen during summer are
dry skin, chafing, and bacterial infections due to heat, friction, and
perspiration.
"We need to drink an adequate quantity of
water. Staying hydrated is important during the summer season. The summer
season poses a set of dermatological challenges, but by following precautions,
we can protect our skin," he said.
