Compression bandaging is vital in integrative treatment for lymphatic filariasis, lymphedema
Compression Bandaging
In the integrative treatment of lymphatic
filariasis and lymphedema, compression bandaging plays an indispensable role.
Apart from diet and other treatment procedures, effective compression bandaging
is the cornerstone in managing lymphedema.
Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) founder-director Dr S R Narahari says that compression bandaging is the essential therapeutic tool in the integrative treatment protocol. "Application of bandages in specially designed methods is essential in the treatment as it exerts controlled pressure on the affected limbs, facilitating the movement of lymphatic fluid and mitigating swelling," he said.
The compression bandaging applies consistent pressure to the affected area, aiding in minimizing fluid accumulation and promoting the drainage of excess lymph. The bandaging also acts as a preventive measure, reducing the risk of secondary infections and promoting skin health by maintaining optimal tissue pressure.
"Like other important components of integrative treatment, compression bandaging enhances overall treatment efficacy. It provides a supportive foundation for the healing process, allowing patients to experience improved mobility and a better quality of life. Compression bandaging is part of the self-care treatment protocol for the patients. We teach proper techniques for compression bandaging, empowering patients to participate in their treatment actively, fostering a sense of control and well-being," Dr Narahari added.
