Tinea Versicolor is another common fungal skin infection that affects a large number of people. It is basically caused by a type of yeast called Malassezia that naturally lives on the skin's surface. According to Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) director and senior dermatologist K.S. Prasanna, this infection can aggravate in some patients, causing discoloration of the skin. "At times, the yeast grows out of control, causing discolored patches. Generally, it affects people who have more oily skin. The fungi thrive on the oily skin during hot and humid weather. A weak immune response against the yeast is also a reason," she said.

Tinea Versicolor mostly affects teenagers and young adults, even though any age can develop it. People living in tropical climates are more prone to this fungus attack that takes place on the back, chest, shoulders, and upper arms where oil glands are concentrated. The common symptoms include small discolored patches, mild itching, and a fine scale. "Treating it from the early stage of symptoms is advisable, as it could spread to large areas on the skin if left unattended. Consult a dermatologist if one notices discolored patches of skin," Dr. Prasanna said, adding that doctors could identify Tinea Versicolor infection through different tests, and it can be treated with proper medications.

It's recommended to keep the skin cool and dry by wearing loose, breathable clothing. Avoiding excessive sweating will also help control tinea versicolor.

"In some cases, it may take several weeks for affected areas to return to their normal skin color. Proper skin care and effective treatment are necessary to prevent recurrence of Tinea Versicolor," she added.
