Preventing flare-ups is the effective way to manage Psoriasis
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic
skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. As it's an autoimmune
skin condition, preventing flare-ups is the main option to manage this
condition, rather than opting for false claims of highly expensive treatments.
Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) director and senior dermatologist Dr K S
Prasanna says that psoriasis can be managed by making lifestyle changes and
following a healthy diet.
"Stress is an important factor that can flare
up psoriasis. So, those with psoriasis should manage stress by practising yoga
and other stress-reducing activities. Maintaining a healthy diet is also
important in the management of psoriasis. Obesity could exacerbate psoriasis,
so people with this skin condition should maintain a balanced diet along with
regular exercise," Dr Prasanna said. Certain medications for other illnesses could
trigger psoriasis flare-ups.
Dr Prasanna adds that patients should clearly
communicate with their doctors about their skin conditions when consulting for
other illnesses. "This can help avoid medications that could worsen
psoriasis. Patients should also follow a specific skincare regimen, as some
skin infections and injuries could further worsen their condition," she
said, adding that patients with psoriasis should use sunscreen when going out
in the sun and apply moisturiser to prevent dry skin. People with psoriasis should
work closely with a dermatologist or healthcare professional to manage their
condition.
Though psoriasis can be a challenging condition to
manage, there are numerous ways to prevent flare-ups and improve the quality of
life. Patients can enjoy a higher quality of life by adopting a healthy
lifestyle, managing stress, avoiding triggers, and seeking professional
guidance.
