Personal hygiene and early diagnosis can prevent Scabies

Scabies are one of the most commonly found skin diseases, but it can be prevented with proper treatment and by following certain hygiene protocols in life.

According to Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) senior dermatologist Dr K.S. Prasanna, scabies is a common skin problem because it's caused by microscopic Sarcoptes scabiei mites which get easily transmitted from one infected person to another. "The mites cause itching and a pimple-like rash on the skin when they burrow into the skin and lay eggs. Scabies can be prevented by following personal hygiene and by seeking medical advice," she said. Scabies is a frustrating condition. This microscopic mite burrows into the skin, laying eggs and causing an array of discomforting symptoms. While scabies is treatable, prevention remains a vital aspect of managing this condition.

"Scabies spreads fast where people are in close contact like hostels, and common accommodation facilities. One should follow a strict hygiene protocol to avoid scabies," Dr. Prasanna said, adding that one needs to totally avoid close contact with an infected person to prevent transmission of scabies, which are more seen in inner thighs, genitals, anus, armpits, navel and fingers.

Steps to be followed for preventing scabies:

Maintaining good personal hygiene is of paramount importance in preventing scabies. Regular and thorough washing of hands and body minimizes the risk of scabies transmission. One should not share clothes, bathing towels and bedding with others. Also, wear clean and washed clothes.

Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent scabies and its further infestation.
