How to prevent Candidiasis, a common fungal infection that affects all

Candidiasis is a common fungal infection that affects almost everyone. However, if proper care is not given, the infection can become truly frustrating, making life uncomfortable. According to Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) Director and Senior Dermatologist K S Prasanna, candidiasis is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida, which naturally lives on human skin in small quantities. "The fungus becomes an infection when it overgrows in warm and moist areas on the human body, mainly in the groin and under the breasts. Infected persons will experience symptoms like a red rash, itching or burning, cracked and swollen skin," Dr Prasanna said, adding that the most important aspect in preventing Candidiasis infection is to avoid triggers and take proper care of the skin.

Dr. Prasanna also warns against self-medication by people for candidiasis, as many are reluctant to openly discuss candidiasis infections with doctors and instead opt directly for medical ointments. "One should not resort to self-medication for fungal infections like candidiasis. It is necessary to seek professional medical support to understand the underlying factors that are causing the infection or re-infections," she said. With some diligence and by following treatment plans, it's easy to prevent candidiasis flares.

Important Points to Avoid Triggers:

·       Keep the skin clean and dry, especially in folds and crevices.

·       Thoroughly dry yourself after bathing.

·       Only wear breathable fabrics like cotton.

·       Do not wear wet and damp clothes.

·       Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care products.

·       Avoid harsh soaps and chemicals.

·       Maintain healthy sugar levels.

·       Always wear washed, clean, and disinfected undergarments
