Yoga is important in managing Lymphedema caused by breast cancer treatment
Lymphedema can occur as a result of breast cancer treatment, particularly after surgery or radiation therapy. Though multiple treatment options are available, yoga has emerged as a wellness therapy for managing and reducing lymphedema. Yoga offers numerous physical and mental benefits to improve the quality of life of those suffering from lymphedema developed after undergoing surgery or radiation therapy for breast cancer treatment.
Dr S R
Narahari of Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) says the different yoga
postures with stretches and controlled breathing aid in alleviating the
symptoms of lymphedema. The yoga poses help in improving lymph circulation,
enhancing lymphatic drainage and reducing fluid retention in affected areas. The
regular practice of yoga helps reduce swelling and discomfort. It also improves the flexibility and strength of the muscles, which is essential for managing
lymphedema.
Dr
Narahari said increasing the flexibility of muscles results in improved
lymphatic drainage and reduces the risk of complications. It also strengthens
the muscles around the affected areas thereby preventing further swelling.
Apart from increasing lymphatic flow, yoga also helps in stress
management and ensures the mental well-being of the patients. "Lymphedema can
cause emotional distress and depression. Yoga promotes mental well-being by
reducing stress. The psychological well-being of the patients is of prime
importance and yoga significantly helps the patients in achieving the same.
Yoga plays an important role in the management of Lymphedema caused by breast cancer treatment." Dr Narahari added.
