Yoga & breathing exercises crucial in treatment of Lymphatic Filariasis & Lymphedema

While proper medical interventions are a must to treat lymphatic filariasis and lymphedema, Yoga and breathing exercises also play a crucial role in enhancing the overall treatment process. IAD Director Dr S R Narahari says yoga that combines physical postures, breath control, and meditation is highly beneficial for the treatment of lymphatic filariasis and lymphedema. "As smooth lymphatic flow is crucial for the treatment of lymphedema, yoga helps to facilitate lymphatic flow and drainage. Certain yoga poses create a gentle inversion that encourages movement of lymphatic fluid resulting in a reduction of swelling and better circulation," he said.

Yoga also strengthens the muscles and improves the flexibility of the body which can alleviate strain on the lymphatic system. It also plays a crucial role in reducing mental stress as patients with lymphatic filariasis and lymphedema undergo a lot of emotional challenges causing mental stress. Yoga and breathing exercises manage stress, anxiety and depression.

Dr K S Prasanna of IAD said the breathing exercises (pranayama) also play an integral part in managing lymphatic filariasis and lymphedema. She said the deep diaphragmatic breathing techniques promote the movement of the diaphragm and facilitate lymphatic drainage. It improves oxygenation throughout the body. "Breathing exercises such as Kapalabhati (skull-shining breath) and alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) help to cleanse the respiratory system, reduce inflammation and enhance the body's healing mechanisms," she added.
