Yoga & breathing exercises crucial in treatment of Lymphatic Filariasis & Lymphedema
Yoga
also strengthens the muscles and improves the flexibility of the body which can
alleviate strain on the lymphatic system. It also plays a crucial role in
reducing mental stress as patients with lymphatic filariasis and lymphedema
undergo a lot of emotional challenges causing mental stress. Yoga and breathing
exercises manage stress, anxiety and depression.

Prasanna of IAD said the breathing exercises (pranayama) also play an integral
part in managing lymphatic filariasis and lymphedema. She said the deep
diaphragmatic breathing techniques promote the movement of the diaphragm and
facilitate lymphatic drainage. It improves oxygenation throughout the body.
"Breathing exercises such as Kapalabhati (skull-shining breath) and
alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) help to cleanse the respiratory
system, reduce inflammation and enhance the body's healing mechanisms," she
added.
